The opinion's express below are not my own, I have taken them from the following website:

WHY I NEEDED LANSINOH
As a novice breastfeeder, I made a few mistakes in the first few days that cost me my own comfort. My daughter is a comfort sucker, she likes the feeling of sucking like many newborns do and so while she seemed to be happily feeding and latched on initially, she would fall asleep while feeding, using me as a dummy so to speak. This left my nipples chapped and bruised, and even had a slight bleeding on the side she preferred. I asked the midwife in the hospital to help me and she came back with 2 mini-sized tubes of lansinoh, explained to me how to get my daughter on properly and how to ease her off the nipple by breaking her suck with my finger and eventually we got there. We started to feed without pain.
USING LANSINOH
After every feed I got in to the habit of smearing a dot of Lansinoh over the chapped area. It is a greasy, very waxy substance that is designed to provide a wet barrier over the nipple and allow the skin to heal underneath. Lansinoh is 100% Lanolin. which is a natural substance that provides sheep with their own waterproof barrier so you can guess that it does something similar for the chapped skin; it effectively waterproofs the nipples so no more damage can occur while the nipple is not in use and the nipple can regain all its natural moisture which has been stripped by the baby nursing. And because it is a natural substance you can still feed your baby while you have the cream on. This is a huge bonus as with my son I had previously tried creams that had to be wiped off the nipple. Although this time around Im sure my daughter must think breasts are supposed to taste like lanolin!
PACKAGING
The Box is not exciting, I wouldn't have lifted in the chemist unless I knew what it was- it is discrete, it doesn't have any images of breasts or nipples and the box simply says ' Lansinoh lanolin- for breastfeeding mothers' It is lilac which is the most distinctive thing about it. My mum had to ask in the chemist for it as she couldn't find it when she was looking for it. Discretion is not a bad aspect when you are buying products for your nipples, but it was difficult to find on the shelf if you hadn't seen the package before.
It comes in a tube of 56g, has a squeezy lid and flip top and can stand on the top so the cream will always be squeezable from the tube. The box has a small advert from the NCT (National Childbirth Trust) on one side offering breastfeeding support. I've never had to ring the help line as my midwives have been ever so helpful this time around but I've only ever heard good things about the NCT helplines from the Mother and baby magazines I subscribe to.
It is really rather thick and sometimes requires a really good squeeze to get some on your fingers but it applies really smoothly.
TASTE, TEXTURE AND SMELL
Obviously when you are using a product for your baby you want to be sure its ok. And so, in the name of research I had to give the Lansinoh a little lick. It wasn't a particularly nice texture, but I couldn't find a distinguishable taste. It hasn't ever seemed to cause any discomfort to my daughter either, even if I have recently put a layer on the nipple she will still feed regardless.
Smell-wise I haven't noticed anything too offensive, I always use a breast pad between the nipple and my bra as it will leave yellow marks everywhere. (I love the NUK comfort breast pad- just a tip)
MY CONCLUSION
Lansinoh works. I have no idea how, but within 3 days of getting a chapped nipple, the cream will have cleared it up. It is a miracle cream for mothers going through the early stages and as you get more experienced in feeding you will probably find you need it less and less. The tube is very expensive (about £9.99) but the hospital did give me some free sample sizes and it lasts quite a long time due to the thickness in consistency.
I think Lansinoh was one of the contributing factors to allowing me to feed my daughter when I was really on the brink of giving up. If you are expecting a baby and would like to Breast feed it would be worth having a tube at home and if you are on the brink of giving up breastfeeding, then just give this a try. I would almost promise you that you will find a difference very quickly!
